Myra Canyon Trestles – Spectacular Views

It has been 2 years since I was up mountain biking on the Myra Canyon Trestles just outside Kelowna.  Wow and thanks to Mike, Mike and Doug for making it happen today.  56 km and a swim in Hydraulic Lake near McCollough Lake.   Awesome and a big Thank you to Celebrex, an anti inflammatory.   Also a big Thank you to Tim Hortons for the coffee and pre exercise caffeine.   We averaged about 20 km/hr which is great.   Views from the trail and trestles was phoenominal.   We made it thru 2 tunnels and saw some Volcanic Rock.

Met Maarten and Joe Vos running the NEW business of Myra Canyon Bike Rentals.  They are helping tourists experience Kelowna’s #1 Tourist Attraction.  They allow people to easily cycle part of the Historical Kettle Valley Railway route built between 1912-1914.  This well established trail is over 18 trestles and through 2 tunnels.  It offers spectacular views or Myra Canyon and Okanagan Lake.   The track was in good shape and is relatively level.  From 9 am to 1 pm you can pick up a bike rental and helmut for $39.    And amazing they have wireless debit and a snack shack.

Also major thanks for the fitness training of Kim at iQuest Kelowna and Carly at VO2 Max.

Talk doesn’t cook rice

It was suggested in my career search that I work a bit more on my Branding and Marketing. The transition branding I have been growing is titled, “Moving with Intent”. People have asked what is that, which seems like a good conversation starter. One of my good web design friends always suggests checking one’s SEO on the branding phrase, so success, if you Google, “Moving with Intent Kelowna” you get my blog. Now as I was searching for “Moving with Intent” without Kelowna I noticed a man blogging on

And he had a phrase from a chinese proverb that caught my attention. “Talk doesn’t cook rice” and a few other great tips for COOKING or maybe cooking is very much like life.
Exerpt from his post,

“There’s a Chinese proverb that goes like this: “Talk doesn’t cook rice.” Often we spend so much time talking or thinking or planning that we never get around to acting on our intentions. We get stuck in the quagmire of doubt and perfectionism and distractions, and that stops us from moving forward. So, to help propel you from inaction to accomplishment, focus on what’s really important. Here are some tips to help you get cooking.

1. Don’t overthink. It’s good to have a clear picture of where you’re going or why, but too much thinking can be paralyzing. Don’t overthink, just do.
2. Forget perfection. Perfectionism is the enemy of action. Kill it, immediately. You can’t let perfect stop you from doing. You can turn a bad draft into a good one, but you can’t turn no draft into a good draft. So get going.
3. Don’t mistake motion for action. A common mistake. A fury of activity doesn’t mean you’re doing anything. When you find yourself moving too quickly, doing too many things at once, this is a good reminder to stop. Slow down. Focus.
4. Focus on the important. Clear the distractions. Pick the one most important thing you must do today, and focus on that. Exclusively. When you’re done with that, repeat the process.
5. Move slowly, consciously. Be deliberate. Action doesn’t need to be done fast. In fact, that often leads to mistakes, and while perfection isn’t at all necessary, neither is making a ridiculous amount of mistakes that could be avoided with a bit of consciousness.
6. Take small steps. Biting off more than you can chew will kill the action. Maybe because of choking, I dunno. But small steps always works. Little tiny blows that will eventually break down that mountain. And each step is a victory, that will compel you to further victories.
7. Negative thinking gets you nowhere. Seriously, stop doing that. Self doubt? The urge to quit? Telling yourself that it’s OK to be distracted and that you can always get to it later? Squash those thoughts. Well, OK, you can be distracted for a little bit, but you get the idea. Positive thinking, as corny as it sounds, really works. It’s self-talk, and what we tell ourselves has a funny habit of turning into reality.
8. Meetings aren’t action. This is a common mistake in management. They hold meetings to get things done. Meetings, unfortunately, almost always get in the way of actual doing. Stop holding those meetings!
9. Talking (usually) isn’t action. Well, unless the action you need to take is a presentation or speech or something. Or you’re a television broadcaster. But usually, talking is just talking. Communication is necessary, but don’t mistake it for actual action.
10. Planning isn’t action. Sure, you need to plan. Do it, so you’re clear about what you’re doing. Just do it quickly, and get to the actual action as quickly as you can.
11. Reading about it isn’t action. You’re reading an article about action. Ironic, I know. But let this be the last one. Now get to work!
12. Sometimes, inaction is better. This might be the most ironic thing on the list, but really, if you find yourself spinning your wheels, or you find you’re doing more harm than good, rethink whether the action is even necessary. Or better yet, do this from the beginning — is it necessary? Only do the action if it is.

What are you doing at 6 am? V02 Max?

As I was looking into the sun this morning as it came up over the trees of city park, I was thinking about all the people who were NOT at the VO2 Max Outdoor Bootcamp.   We all moved here for the weather, right?   For the green grass, right?  For the pristine, clear, fresh water, right?   As I was pulling the band for a row in the circuit and I looked at the bridge, cars begining to stream into work.    How easy would it have been to put on your Lululemon and join Carly Mitchell for some cardio / muscle workout?  Not that hard.    What are we waiting for call  250-826-8809 or go to her web site.  VO2 Max

A thank you and Good Bye to FormaShape

Good Morning all at 9505.

I wanted to write a quick e-mail to say goodbye, yesterday was my last day.   And a quote from Hans Selye from p. 137 of Stephen Coveys 7 Habits course Guide:

“A long, healthy, and happy life is the result of making contributions, of having meaningful projects that are personally exciting and contribute to and bless the lives of others”

It has been a great 7 years at Whitewater Composites and FormaShape in Kelowna BC.  Many projects, clients, and events.   And most importantly all of you have trained me, assisted me and supported the Composites business and the clients that we focus on every day: yesterday, today and in the future.

Everyone of you who I have worked with has left me with something for the future, thank you as we all work to do what we can for today, and “renew ourselves in body, heart, mind and soul”…   ( a little more Stephen Covey)

Take care all, I will miss the energy of all of you when there is a truck to load and ship with composite parts, or to run a race as a team, or to brainstorm and execute solutions to a problem.

Contact in the future is:  harperdw@telus.net

V02 Max Workout July 12, 2010 Fitness Notes

VO2 MAX is in City Park, summer 2010.

Rode my bike down for the 7:15 am Outdoor Bootcamp class with Carly Mitchell trainer and owner of V02 Max.    The wind was amazing, great waves on the lake, keeping things, me, cool.   Carly had the greatest upper body workout which was perfect for those who are wakeboarding or water skiing this summer.   She has some very neat portable equipment

She has a summer special with unlimited training, and enlist today, join anytime.    See her website for all pricing and schedules.

Living in Kelowna, why would we not do an ourdoor bootcamp every morning before work?

Work outs in Kelowna City Park, V02 Max

On July 1st Mitch and I biked down to Kelowna’s City Park to try out an innovative way to work out.

Sounds like this is running over the summer, check it out at V02 Max.

Tried it again, July 12, 2010…   great work out !!!!
